This page contains recommendations for managing any digital files which are not uploaded to your wiki.

Undoubtedly, you have accumulated many digital files in your life and no one could even guess how many files we will be accumulating in the future. I know the thought of trying to organize things is daunting, but open a new page and call it Personal Data Strategy.

Have a Strategy

I recommend you try to pick as few as possible, because I try to keep things simple if possible.

Storage Options

  • Smartphone: you carry it everywhere; it might be your primary capture device, but don't think about it as long term storage.
  • Desktop Synch Tools
    • Apple Desktop
    • Google CloudSomething
    • Microsoft OneSomething
  • Cloud storage providers
    • Box.com, dropbox, Google Drive,
  • USB drives

Reasonable Risk

Let's be honest. Any device you sometimes carry with you when you leave the house could be damaged beyond use at any moment. A little bump; a little shove; in just the right place at just the right time, could knock your phone out of your hand and down a storm drain. Think of these devices as disposable, from a data standpoint. Fortunately, there are low-cost, easy-to-use options for synchronizing just about everything on your phone with a cloud service, but many of them require manual configuration, and I recommend you have a plan before you start changing settings.
